  2. Introducing the ASP.NET Web API

    April 11, 2012

Microsoft likes big stacks! Look at Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) or, better yet, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF). With either of these "foundations", you start out a noob and you come out the other side a freak'in Ph.D in Quantum Physics. It doesn't have to be that hard! There has to be a better way….

Well, Microsoft has been definitely been going the right direction. If you have followed any of the work on the WCF Web API, then you know how awesome this stuff is. This is its new home but you can still self host just like you could before. We are talking about a Web API that is heavily Convention-Over-Configuration based! Gone are the days of looking through a myriad of documentation as to how to setup your web.config file. Those days are over and you will be surprised at how nice the new stack is.

  5. Data Mining with Excel 2010 and PowerPivot

    January 11, 2012

Excel 2010 provides a world-class platform for enterprise decision making. This presentation introduces the decision-making ability possible with the free Excel add-ins for PowerPivot and SQL Server Data Mining. The data mining is a service hosted in Microsoft's Analysis Services, but the Excel add-in exposes the enterprise-strength server technology to analysts and executives. This talk introduces some functions from the "Analyze" and “Data Mining” tabs, including data mining model creation from Excel data. Having seen this presentation some had thought it was all Excel since the functions seem so seamless. The Excel interface provides a familiar way for professionals to make actionable decisions.

  7. Build cool devices controlled by your phone!

    November 09, 2011

Two years ago, Dan built a water cannon aimed and controlled by Windows Phone 7 / WCF / MEF / Arduino / IIS Live Smooth Streaming.  Last summer, Dan rebuilt the squirt gun using the netduino and the .net micro framework.  This presentation will focus on the C# .net object oriented code in VS2010 for the squirt gun and other cool projects.  Dan will focus on the software, but also present the .net microcontroller and the hardware to make it all work.  He built a device that uses servos to aim a squirt gun anywhere in the pool area!!  IIS Live Smooth Streaming video is used so that Dan can nail his kids with a high powered spray from the office or anywhere.  Spraying the kids is as easy as touching the position on the screen where they are located.  Come to the meeting to learn how to integrate custom hardware with your software.  Dan will also show you how he turned his Android phone into a remote control device for his garage door opener.
